Laikipia residents protest jumbos invasion
Residents of Mutara in Laikipia County staged peaceful demonstration Friday, October 21 protesting frequent invasion of their farms by stray elephants. The residents blocked the Rumuruti-Nanyuki Road calling on authorities to act with immediate effect.
According to the residents, the stray elephants from the Mutara Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) ranch have caused them sleepless nights and destroyed their crops.
The villagers said that they have been forced to spend most of their nights keeping guard but with little success as the animals still invade their farms.
Children have also been forced to abandon schooling due to the threat forced by the jumbos which turn hostile upon provocation.
Additionally, they have been forced to harvest their crops before maturity.
The residents lamented that despite efforts to seek audience with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the management of the Mutara ADC, nothing has been forthcoming.
They now want the County Government of Laikipia and other state agencies to join hands in ensuring they are protected and a lasting solution reached.
They also want compensation by the KWS over the losses they have suffered through destruction of property.
