Lamu Governor pays entire year’s school fees for Bungoma girl

Diana Nyokabi, a bright student from Bungoma who was facing bleak academic uncertainty after her parents were unable to raise her school fees, now has reason to smile.

Her fortunes have changed in just hours after Citizen Digital highlighted her plight; her entire year’s fees have been paid off and she won’t have to put her dreams on hold.

Lamu Governor Fahim Twaha paid her fees on Thursday, putting an end to the family’s heartbreak and providing the bright young pupil with much-needed wind beneath her sails.

Hundreds of Kenyans, including musician Akothee, have rallied in support of the girl to enable her join Moi Girls’ High School in Eldoret.

The singer urged Kenyans to contribute to ensure that a deserving student could attend high school.

Citizen Digital met the girl and her mother, Priscilla Nyanchera, at Bungoma D.E.B Primary School on Wednesday as she was enrolling back to school.

“I have been selling groceries for a very long time and educating my daughter hoping that in the future she will be able to assist me,” Nyanchera said.

Nyokabi expressed concern that her dream of attending her dream secondary school would be dashed if she did not receive a county scholarship.

She said she was initially happy when she was selected to benefit from Governor Wycliffe Wangamati-led scholarship, only to later find out that her name had been mysteriously ejected.

Nyokabi, who dreams of becoming a lawyer in the future, had appealed to any well-wisher to help her join Form One and move forward with her studies.

Bungoma D.E.B Primary School Headteacher Tobias Khisa said he received the girl back with great shock, noting that her situation may demoralize many learners in the school but saying he would nevertheless admit her.
