Residents of Malelei village in Lamu County are now forced to sleep on trees in fear of Al Shabaab militants who have occasionally terrorised the area.

Malelei village, which is located in Witu Ward, has long experienced terror attacks from the militia group.

According to reports, the locals have only daytime at their disposal where they can stay home and run errands such as farming but when night falls, they are forced to seek refuge on trees.

In the recent attacks, the bandits would attack the village households where they would storm houses and slaughter people in cold blood, most of their victims being the men.

The incidences saw more than 15 people killed and over 15 houses burnt to the ground.
