Landlady rescued after 30 minutes inside a pit latrine in Kirinyaga

A pit latrine that Rosemary Wangithi Koori fell into.

A 60-year-old woman, who fell into a pit latrine in Gitwe village, Kirinyaga County, has been rescued.

Rosemary Wangithi Koori was heard crying in the 45 foot latrine inside her compound, which also holds hostels for Kirinyaga University students.

Neighbors responded to the distress calls, and immediately notified the County government. A team of fire fighters was dispatched to the location.

“She stayed inside this pit latrine for  about 30 minutes as we waited for the fire fighters to arrive,” Wangithi’s neighbour Peter Mwangi said.

Speaking after rescuing the woman the chief fire officer John Kiama said they managed to rescue Wangithi and immediately rushed her to Kerugoya hospital.

“We have managed to rescue her and she has been taken to the hospital  for medical attention after being exposed to human waste,” Kiama said.

Wangithi is admitted at Kerugoya referral hospital, and relatives say she is responding well to treatment.

Wangithi is a landlady, who rents her houses to a number of students in Kirinyaga University.

“These are hostels of Kirinyaga university students and we wonder why she is using a mabati old toilet yet she has the capacity to build a good toilet in this compound,” John Kiama asked.
