Mountain Bongo, a gazelle native to Mount Kenya and Aberdare
catchment area, has been declared a species at the verge of extinction.
According KWS census of 2021, less than 100 Mountain Bongos
survive in the wild.
This called for an immediate recovery plan to save the
animal from complete wipe out.
KWS in partnership with KFS and Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy
(MKWC) has established the Mawingu Mountain Bongo Sanctuary in Laikipia County.
The project set on a 776-acre piece of land aims at restoring
Mountain Bongos to stable population
by 2050.
