LG Electronics scales laundry stores in Kenya, targets African cities

LG Electronics is using Kenya as a launching pad for its Laundromat project in Africa, which responds to a growing trend of people opting for third-party services in cleaning clothes and other items.

After successful piloting in Nairobi, the company has moved to Mombasa empowering entrepreneurs in commercial laundry services with technical know and availing partners to enable the investors easily set-up, reap profit in the fast-growing business.

“Many people in the urban areas are continuously outsourcing laundry services to third parties creating incoming earning opportunities in the area, it is a trend that has picked up in other parts of the world and slowly catching up in Africa,” noted Faith Njoroge, East Africa Washing Machine and Product Marketer, LG.

“We have worked with several investors in Nairobi to help them set up, the uptake has gone beyond our expectations with several stores coming up in different parts of the city, through seminars and industry linkages, we are now in Mombasa selling the concept in coast region,” she said.

She notes that the Airbnb concept has also helped boost the uptake of commercial laundry business in Kenya. LG plans to launch the project in other parts of Africa with an aim of boosting sales of its commercial washing machines. 

As part of the strategy, the company says it has roped in detergent firms and the Buy Now and Pay Later providers to equip investors with necessary components in setting up the business.

She was speaking at the launch of LG dryers and dishwashers for the Kenyan market which aims to revolutionize how Kenyan households manage their laundry and dishwashing needs.

This is part of the company’s commitment to enhance consumers' lives through advanced technology and superior quality.

Speaking during the rollout of the appliances, LG Electronics Managing Director Dongwon Lee said, "With our commitment to innovation and quality, we aim to elevate the daily lives of Kenyan consumers by providing them with cutting-edge appliances that deliver convenience, efficiency, and superior performance.

The appliances have been engineered to prioritize energy efficiency and sustainability. With eco-friendly features like the Inverter Direct Drive motor, which reduces energy consumption and noise levels, and the use of eco-friendly materials, the appliances are designed to minimize their environmental impact.
