Lilian Waithera: Fresh twist as probe shows suspects gun did not discharge fatal bullet
A report from the ballistics investigations
unit of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) appears to have
deflated efforts by detectives handling the death probe of NHIF staffer Lilian
Waithera.
The report ascertained that the Glock pistol
surrendered by the suspect in custody, a licenced gun holder, was not the one
that discharged the killer bullet.
The negative ballistics report now sends detectives
back to the drawing board with findings seemingly changing the course of
investigations.
Some among a host of eye witnesses who
recorded statements with police claim to have heard a single gunshot on the day
that the 46-year-old Waithera was shot.
Detectives are inclined towards a possible
accidental discharge or a stray bullet situation, but they are also not ruling out
a targeted hit at Waithera; the latter, however, according to police would be
far-fetched as there is currently no substantive motive.
But as detectives piece the puzzle of Waithera's
death, her family, friends and colleagues congregated at the Divine Mercy
Catholic Church in Kariobangi for a requiem mass in honour of the departed.
Her husband Paul Mbogo spoke of how big a gap
she has left, promising his sons to tighten his belt during this difficult
moment.
“We had so many
plans for you, I want to promise you that I’ll give you all the love and take
care of you as your mother would have wished,” he stated.
Her colleagues termed her as a diligent and
dedicated staffer who not only cultivated a good relationship with colleagues
but also clients.
NHIF Chairman Eng. Michael Kamau said: “She
dedicated 15 years of work to NHIF members with diligence and zeal, everyone
who met her will testify that she touched the lives of those around her and the
people she served.”
NHIF CEO Dr. Peter Kamunyo, on his part,
stated: “She was a friend, not just to her colleagues, but to our clients and
members. Everyone will testify about how she gave up herself to make sure that
she does the right thing at the right time.”
As Waithera begins her last journey on earth,
investigators continue to seek answers as whether it was an accident or an
assassination, and if so who killed her and why?
