Several contractors and vendors who supplied goods and services to the Machakos County Government have raised alarm over millions of shillings in unpaid dues, accusing county officials of intimidation whenever they seek redress.

The contractors, speaking to the press in Machakos, said they have endured months of financial strain after the county allegedly failed to honour their contracts.

“We supplied in the year 2023/2024 and since then, tumekua tukizungushwa sana. We have tried to follow all protocols followed by any supplier, but after supplying, things changed,” said a vendor, Maureen Mwende.

Another contractor, Sammy Mutua, said,” Nilikua nimechukua loan, and now I was forced to borrow money from my friends to clear the loans, so it has been tough.”

They have issued an ultimatum demanding payment by Sunday, threatening to camp outside the governor’s office from Tuesday and remain there until their grievances are addressed.

Sammy Kioko another contractor, said, “In Machakos, you cannot speak, intimidation is the language of the day and you cannot even express your grievances. You can also never be paid without a kickback. People are suffering and we have no one to help us."

Efforts to reach the Machakos Finance CECM bore no fruit.
