Residents living along the Machakos–Embu border near River Tana, Githecu area, have raised concerns over suspected water pollution, which they believe is being caused by untreated sewage discharge.

The residents allege that companies operating near the river may be responsible for contaminating the water, which they say has recently changed colour and now emits a strong, foul smell.

According to the affected community members, the river serves as a key source of water for domestic use. However, they claim that since the suspected pollution began, many residents have suffered from stomach upsets after using the water.

They are now calling on the government, environmental agencies, and local authorities to urgently intervene, investigate the source of the pollution, and take action against those responsible to prevent further health risks.

The residents warn that continued pollution of River Tana poses a serious threat to public health and the environment if immediate measures are not taken.
