The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the temporary closure of the busy Maimahiu-Narok Highway.

According to a statement issued by KeNHA on Sunday, the closure was caused by the discovery of a severe crack six kilometres from Mai Mahiu town.

The crack, according to KeNHA, cuts across the road, making it dangerous for motorists to use.

Although the KeNHA did not immediately determine the cause of the massive crack, preliminary reports attribute it to the country's ongoing rains in various parts.

The area has also been affected in the past by earth movements.

To ease traffic flow as restoration work begins, KeNHA has advised motorists to take the following alternate routes:

Narok - Kisiriri - Mau Summit - Njoro turn off (B18) Road, to join Nakuru and other destinations.

Narok - Bomet - Kaplong (B6) Road and connect to Kaplong - Kericho (B7) Road.
