28 people are still missing from the killer floods in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County, that have so far claimed the lives of 71 residents.

The Ministry of Interior on Tuesday issued a statement saying 46 people had died from the tragedy while 53 others were still missing.

However, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said by Tuesday morning 71 people had been confirmed dead, meaning 28 were still unaccounted for.

Kithure Kindiki's ministry further said the counties that have been adversely affected by floods in the last 24 hours are Nairobi, Tana River, West Pokot, and Homa Bay.

Also, landslides and mudslides have affected residents in Muranga and Nakuru counties.

So far, a total of 169 lives have been lost due to the floods, with 102 people injured across the affected regions.

At least 30,099 households have been displaced, affecting approximately 150,495 people. In Sindo, Homa Bay County, 161 households were displaced by the flash floods after following a heavy downpour in the area.

Overall, 190,942 individuals have been affected by the flooding in the country.

"We are actively carrying out search, rescue, and retrieval operations particularly in Nakuru due to the recent mudslide and have rescued 23 people in Garissa," the Interior Ministry said.

A reporting desk manned by representatives from the national government, Nakuru county, and the Kenya Red Cross has been set up at the site of the tragedy in Mai Mahiu.
