Main suspect in murder of 81-year-old city consultant Gerishon Mwiti arrested

The main suspect in the case where 81-year-old scholar and consultant Gerishon Mwiti was hacked to death has been arrested.

Dr. Mwiti was killed on January 14, 2023 at Thigiri Ridge in Naiobi’s Westlands area.

The suspect identified as Bernard Kioko, who was a gardener at Dr. Mwiti’s home, was arrested on Wednesday at Mabatini in Mathare.

“This is after an operation that lasted more than 24 hours, after the suspect engaged detectives in a hide-and-seek game from Mwingi in Kitui County until his arrest this afternoon deep in the Mathare settlement,” detectives said in a statement shortly after capturing Kioko.

He had been on the run since the scholar’s death last Saturday.

Dr. Mwiti’s family told the police that they found the patriarch's lifeless body sprawled in their garden, bearing a deep cut at the back of his head.

Detectives are currently interrogating the suspect for more details into the killing.
