Huge fire engulfs Malik Heights on Ngong Road

A major fire broke out at Malik Heights building on Ngong Road in Nairobi on Monday night, with properties of unknown value destroyed in the raging inferno.

No casualty was reported as at time of going to press.

The number of occupants in the building was also not immediately established.

Eye witnesses say the 9-storey building, which houses motor vehicle bazaars, offices, restaurants among other commercial premises, went up in flames at 8pm after pockets of explosion were heard emanating from the business center.

The cause of the fire, which allegedly began on the ground floor of Malik Heights, is still unknown.

At least four firefighting vehicles were dispatched to the scene, but only two managed to access the plaza, with Nairobi County Government saying heavy traffic on Ngong Road made it almost impossible for firefighters to respond in time.

Malik Heights, which was officially opened for business in 2017, neighbours residential buildings and other vehicle bazaars.

Live video footage from the scene by Citizen TV at 9pm Monday showed vehicles being removed from the basement of the plaza.
