Major Peter Mugure detained for 21 days over murder of wife and two children

Major Peter Mugure, the key suspect in the murder of Joyce Syombua and her two children, and his co-accused Collins Pamba have been detained for 21 days pending conclusion of investigations.

Central region’s Senior Deputy Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Peter Mailanyi, on Monday told a Nanyuki court to give police more time saying there are several complexities in trying to unravel the murder of the three family members.

Mr. Mailanyi also argued that Joyce Syombua’s phone needs to be subjected to more analysis and Major Mugure’s residence further investigated.

“We believe there are other suspects still at large who are involved and police need to trace and arrest them,” he stated.

According to Mr. Mailanyi, other suspects involved in the murder could be Major Mugure’s juniors in the military hence, if released he is likely to interfere with investigations.

The court also heard that DNA samples have since been taken from the bodies but are yet to be analysed to link the suspects to the murder, further that post mortem has also not yet been carried out.

Mugure’s lawyer however asked the court to direct the police to grant him access to his client saying he has been denied access to the suspect since his arrest.

Mugure was detained at Nanyuki Police Station while Pamba will be held at Naromoru Police Station.

The matter was set for mentioning on December 9, 2019.

Bodies believed to be of Major Mugure’s estranged wife Joyce Syombua (31) and children; Shanice Maua (10) and Prince Michael (5), were on Saturday discovered at Makaburini in Thingithu area, approximately 9-minutes away from the Laikipia Air Base, with the children stacked on top of their mother.

21-year-old Collins Pamba, a casual labourer at the senior officers’ mess in the Laikipia Airbase, is alleged to have aided Major Mugure in burying the bodies of the three late in the night.

Collins led the detectives to Thingithu area where he pointed out the exact spot where the bodies were exhumed.
