Man, 19, sentenced to 40 years in jail for defiling girl in Embu

A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after being found guilty of defiling a 2-year-old child in Kavaari Village, Embu County on July 13, 2018.

The probation report filed in court cited the suspect, Erick Karenga, as a seasoned paedophile who has been bailed out of previous incidences by family members.

Karenga denied the charges with the defence urging the court to free him arguing that there was unsubstantial evidence to push for a penal sentence.

The prosecution however presented 6 witnesses, who allegedly caught the suspect in the gruesome act, to testify during the course of the three-year trial that culminated in his sentencing.

While sentencing the accused, Senior Resident Magistrate Juliana Ndeng'eri dismissed Karenga's defense saying he had been caught pants down defiling the minor.

The court pointed out that the life of a two-year-old had been changed and her innocence stolen, with the accused seemingly aware of his action. According to the magistrate, the Probation Officer's report did not help as it painted Karenga in a bad light.

The report pointed out that the accused has always been assisted by his aunty who bails him out whenever he is in trouble.

According to the magistrate, the sentence will act as a deterrent to others with such behavior.
