Man kills self after being denied money to buy bhang in Kirinyaga

Kirinyaga residents have raised alarm over rising cases of suicide after a 26-year-old man killed himself after being denied money to buy bhang by his mother.

The deceased, Peter Mwangi is said to have hanged himself at their rental home in Kagio town on Monday night.

Mwea-West Police Commander Wilson Koskei confirmed the incident saying the matter was reported by the mother of the deceased Teresiah Wanjiru Kimani on Tuesday morning at Kiamaciri Police Station.

He said the officers rushed to the scene but found Mwangi’s body dangling on the roof.

According to the police boss, there was a brief altercation between the mother and the son as the deceased asked for money to buy the drug, which Ms Wanjiru refused.

“I never thought he would commit suicide because of the money to buy bhang, a substance that I know is illegal in the country…but I was shocked to find him dead,” Teresiah Wanjiru told the police.

The police boss expressed concerns over rising suicide cases in Kirinyaga which he says occur more often among younger people than older people.
