Detectives from the Operations Action Team (OAT) and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) have taken into custody a suspect accused of robbing a charcoal vendor at gunpoint and making away with Ksh.200,000 in Mukurweini, Nyeri County.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), 49-year-old James Kanyi Gachara enticed the victim with a lucrative deal of selling 20 sacks of charcoal to a friend.

Despite the charcoal vendor lacking the sufficient stock, he mobilised his suppliers to meet the demand.

After sourcing the supplies, the vendor was ambushed by the suspect and his accomplices aboard a Toyota Prado SUV.

The victim was hurled into the vehicle, assaulted and coerced at gunpoint to surrender his Equitel PIN where the suspects withdrew Ksh.200,000 from his account.

Thereafter, a female accomplice to Gachara held the vendor at gunpoint as the rest of the gang sped off towards Mukurweini.

Moments later, a red motorcycle picked up the armed woman who disappeared into the same direction.

After receiving a tip-off, the DCI detectives arrived at Nguyoini area and documented the scene.

Through forensic intelligence, they traced Gachara and apprehended him. Currently, the officers are working on leads to apprehend Gachara's accomplices.
