A man who was captured in a now-viral video drinking an
entire bottle of Jagermeister in under two minutes has died.
The man who has been confirmed to be South
African was reportedly taking part in a binge-drinking competition.
Police in Waterval, Limpopo, on Wednesday said
they had launched a probe into the death of the unidentified man who is
believed to be aged between 25 and 30.
In the video, the man is seen gulping down an
entire bottle of Jagermeister in less than two minutes as people clap and cheer
him on.
He, however, soon collapsed and was rushed
to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela
Mojapelo said the incident took place at a local liquor
outlet where patrons participated in a drinking competition, in a bid to win
R200 (about Ksh.1,400).
“The winner who could consume the entire
bottle of Jägermeister within a specified time, would get R200 cash,” Mr.
Mojapelo was quoted by local media as saying.
“One of them immediately collapsed thereafter
and was taken to the local clinic, where he was certified dead.”
Jagermeister is a German digestif drink that has an alcohol volume
of 35 per cent.
In an observational study, researchers from the University of Oxford noted that drinking had an effect on the brain's gray matter -- regions in the brain that make up "important bits where information is processed," according to lead author Anya Topiwala, a senior clinical researcher at Oxford.
