Manhunt for Nairobi driver caught on camera assaulting police officer

Police in Nairobi are hunting for a driver who was caught on camera fighting with a police officer before taking off.

The incident which was caught on camera on Thursday morning, shows the officer in police uniform fighting with a driver of a Nissan March before he was saved by well-wishers.

According to Nairobi traffic police commander Joshua Omukata, the driver is said to have caused an accident in Karen and traffic officers radioed ahead to their colleagues to be on the lookout of the car.

Traffic officers on Ngong Road next to the Nairobi Montessori Preparatory School spotted and stopped the driver and when the officer entered the car, drama ensued. As the officer is being dragged out of the car, the driver can be seen holding an object which we couldn’t figure out what it was immediately.

The video starts with the two locked in a vicious fight inside the tiny car before pedestrians intervened, dragged the police officer out of the car and when one tried to deal with the driver, he drove off.

Attempts by the officer to hang on to the car’s open door were unfruitful as he was forced to let go when the driver accelerated and left the scene.

Omukata says they have circulated the car’s registration number KCT 730Q and are hopeful he will be in custody before the end of the day.
