Maseno University has been closed indefinitely following riots at the university that led to the death of a student on Monday night and the skirmishes with police that followed on Tuesday morning.

In a statement, Maseno University Vice Chancellor Catherine Akinyi Muhoma said that the university environment has become volatile and therefore not conducive to learning and gave the students 30 minutes to vacate the premises.

According to a section of students, the chaos on Monday began after police lobbed teargas at them during their campus presidential campaigns, leading to running battles that saw one of them lose his life.

The students retaliated for the death of their colleague leading to the skirmishes experienced Tuesday morning.

The deceased, who was a first year medical student, was taken to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.

This comes just days after unknown people set the Finance and Dean of Students offices on fire.

The event, in which no casualties were reported, was linked to the campus elections, which were to take place on Friday.

Earlier, Kisumu Police County Commander Nicholas Njiri had suggested that the institution be closed indefinitely.

Investigations into the fire are still ongoing.
