Mbagathi Hospital in Nairobi County has successfully undertaken the first-ever Cementless Total Hip Replacement surgery in the country.

The surgical process was conducted on Tuesday at the newly unveiled modern theatre at the facility.

The hospital announced the breakthrough on Wednesday as they commended the new leadership for overseeing the transformative initiatives.

“Yesterday, under the leadership of Dr. Athumani, an accomplished orthopaedic surgeon, the surgical team at Mbagathi County Hospital achieved a groundbreaking milestone – the first-ever Cementless Total Hip Replacement surgery,” read a post on X.

“This remarkable procedure took place in the hospital's recently modernized theatre, a testament to the transformative initiatives undertaken during the CEO's tenure at the facility.”

The procedure which is performed on a younger age group with good bone density involves a ceramic hip being used with an uncemented type of hip replacement.

The ceramic surface is very smooth and wears away less than a metal surface and is also a scratch-resistant.

The hospital also recognised Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s efforts in ensuring all Level Five Hospitals are run by CEOs since they push for donations of equipment.

“The idea of our Governor @SakajaJohnson and Super DG @JNjorogeMuchiri introducing CEOs to run level 5 hospitals was the best decision. Hospitals are being run in a more professional way. We are seeing Mbagathi receiving donations day in and day out, which are lobbied by the CEO,” stated Mbagathi.

Dr Alex Irungu was appointed in charge of Mbagathi in September together with three other CEOs to run the county's top hospitals.

Others picked were Frederick Otieno Obwanda ( Mutuini Hospital), Christine Kiteshu ( Pumwani Maternity) and Martin Alfred Wekesa Wafula (Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital).
