Medics, gov’t in renewed war as court declares strike illegal

The confrontation between the doctors and nurses and the government over the ongoing strike is set to heighten following a court order directing them to resume duty immediately.

The Employment and Labour Relations Court on Tuesday, December 13 declared the ongoing doctors’ and nurses’ strike illegal ordering the medics to resume duty immediately.

Labour Court Judge, Hellen Wasilwa, directed the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) and the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) bosses to use their powers to order their members to report work.

However, KMPDU Secretary General, Ouma Oluga, and his KNUN counterpart, Seth Panyako, have called on their members to stay put and defy the court order.
