Merry making, fight ensues, three gun shots: Final moments of Ida Odinga’s bodyguard

Police in Kisumu are
hunting down a suspect believed to have shot and killed a police bodyguard attached
to Ida Odinga, the wife of opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Confirming the Friday
incident, Kisumu County Police Commander Alphonse Wambua says the suspect
identified as Collins Okundi shot the deceased, corporal Barrack Otieno, twice
on the head and leg and also shot and injured a woman who was in the company of
the officer.
According to police, the
deceased bodyguard and the woman had left Dondez Bar & Restaurant in Kisumu
and as they entered Victoria Gardens apartment in Uzima area, they were accosted
by the suspect who is a manager at the bar.
A scuffle ensued between
the three and in the process, the suspect disarmed the officer, taking control
of his pistol before committing the offence.
The police boss said the woman
in question was also shot in the leg and is being treated at the Aga Khan
hospital in Kisumu.
“The suspect Collins Okundi
immediately left with the firearm of the officer,” said the police boss.
Nyanza Regional Police Boss Karanja Muiruri led a team of senior officers who visited the scene to establish what ensued as other security officers embarked on a manhunt for the suspect.
Michael Adede, who is the
Manager of Victoria Gardens, says the 3am incident happened at the apartment
belonging to the woman who has been a tenant with them for the last seven years.
"The body was transferred to Star Hospital Mortuary. A spent cartridge and bullet head of 9mm were recovered at the scene," a police report on the incident reads in part.
