Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza not out of the woods yet as another impeachment motion filed
The Meru County Assembly has
once again drawn daggers against Governor Kawira Mwangaza, tabling a fresh
motion seeking to dim her ambition of leading the county.
In a seven-day notice of
motion filed on Tuesday, Meru County Assembly Minority Whip Dennis Kiogora
accused the Governor of nepotism, illegal appointments, unlawful dismissals,
usurpation of constitutional and statutory functions, as well as forceful entry
into the assembly.
These among other
accusations, he argued, have dented the county’s image and potentially ruined
service delivery for the people of Meru.
“The
discreditable acts have created a toxic environment in which the Governor
cannot be legitimately expected or relied to work harmoniously with the staff
and elected leaders at the national and county levels of government,” said the Abogeta
West ward MCA.
Mwangaza has however poured
cold water on the attempts to oust her from office, citing that the county
assembly members were in contempt of court for tabling a fresh motion against
her.
In a statement issued
through her lawyer, the embattled county chief has vowed to seek redress in
court even as residents called for a truce between the two arms of the devolved
unit.
Her lawyer Elias Mutuma
stated: “However new the motion is fashioned it reamins to be a motion for
impeachment and the High Court has already stopped that process from taking
place and so I believe the county assembly is quite not in order in proceeding
in such a motion.”
Justice Thrispsisa Cherere
of the Meru High Court had last week issued conservatory orders barring MCAs
from acting upon Govenor Mwangaza’s impeachment motion pending the hearing and
determination of a case filed by the embattled county chief.
The MCAs had however argued
that the High Court lacked jurisdiction to bar the House from proceeding with
the motion.
