Meru MCA aspirant among three arrested for attempting to con M-Pesa agent
Three people, among them a Meru County MCA
aspirant, have been arrested on suspicion of obtaining money by fraudulent
means in Nakuru.
Confirming
the incident, Rift Valley Regional Criminal Investigations Officer Mwenda Meme said
Michael Andai, Shadrack Otieno and Benson Thuranira Kathiai were
arrested after they attempted to dupe a mobile money agent.
The trio
are said to have approached the mobile money agent on Wednesday seeking to
deposit Ksh.64,000 but soon after claimed that the transaction had not gone
through, demanding reimbursement.
The
mobile money agent was however two steps ahead of the suspects, swiftly
informing law enforcement authorities.
Meme also
revealed that Kathiai, an MCA aspirant in Muthara ward, Meru County, is not new
to fraudulent cases having been implicated in similar incidents in Busia, Meru,
Mwea and Mombasa.
“Kathiai is a serial obtainer according to
our investigations. He is an aspiring MCA in Meru. We have liased with the OCS
and DCI of that area so that they can come collect them after we take the suspects
to court,” said Meme.
