Meru University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Romanus Odhiambo was forced to proceed on a terminal leave after a meeting held by the institution's Governing Council.

In a letter issued to the vice chancellor by the chairman of the Council Professor Bosire Mwebi,  it was indicated that Odhiambo was not able to meet his expected target on his delegated duties hence the council’s resolution on not renewing his contract.

“The University Council in its meeting held on 27th February 2023, evaluated your performance and found it to be below expectations. Therefore, the council declined to renew your contract as requested in your letter dated 20th December 2022,” said the council.

The vice chancellor was also restricted from conducting any sort of business which is in relation to the University.

The council thus directed the university don to proceed on his compulsory leave of 121 days as the campus seeks for a new Vice-Chancellor to succeed him.

“You are not authorised to transact on any capital project in the University but restrict your transactions only to personal emoluments and recurrent expenditure. You are required to proceed on your pending leave of 121 days once a suitable replacement has been identified,” Chairman reiterated.

In absentia of the Vice Chancellor, Charity Gichuki who has been Prof. Odhiambo's deputy will be in charge of the office as the acting VC.
