Miguna Miguna returns to exile in Canada, to miss father-in-laws burial tomorrow

Lawyer Miguna Miguna says he has been forced to return back to Canada after Kenyan authorities declined to revoke a red alert to allow him fly back to Nairobi.

Miguna says he intended to attend the burial of his father-in-law, Mzee Benson Omolo Awange, in Migori on Wednesday, January 22 but has been left with no option but to return back to Canada after the government declined to follow court orders allowing him back in Kenya.

The firebrand lawyer, however, maintains he will not relent in his quest for justice.

“Having waited for Uhuru Kenyatta and his appointees at the ministries of Interior and Immigration to obey court orders and revoke their illegal “red alerts” to no avail, I’ve no option but to return to exile in Canada. I’ll not surrender. The struggle continues. Viva!” said Miguna in a tweet on Tuesday.

Miguna arrived in Berlin, Germany, on January 5, 2020 ahead of his scheduled flight to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)  in Nairobi.

He was, however blocked from boarding two separate flights to Kenya following red alerts by Kenyan authorities.

On January 8, on Citizen TV’s JKLive show, Government spokesman (Rtd) Col. Cyrus Oguna admitted that the Kenyan government indeed issued the red alert over what he termed as the Miguna’s “unruly behavior.”

“Miguna was unruly and that went against international regulations put there by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) annex 17 which prohibits any unruly passengers to travel,” he stated.

The High Court would later on January 13, direct Attorney General Paul Kariuki Kihara to submit an opinion to the court regarding the disobedience of orders relating to the deportation and return of Miguna Miguna into the country.

Issuing the orders, Judge John Mativo noted that the disregard of court orders is a “serious corrosive force that can erode the rule of law.”
