For more than a month, the family of Desmond Barrack had been searching
for him in Mombasa after he went missing shortly after arriving in the city for
business early January.
His body has since been found at the Coast General Teaching and Referral
Morgue, with his death leaving them devastated and raising more questions.
The family claims the late Desmond had head injuries, while the hospital
insists the deceased was brought by a Good Samaritan who said he had been
involved in an accident.
Elwin Omondi, the deceased’s brother, said: “Iinasemekana alipata
accident tarehe 26 aliletwa na msamaria mwema..kinachotushangaza hakuna details
za huyo msamaria mwema.”
Melvin Atieno, mother to the deceased, added: “Hiyo gari iliyomleta ni
gari gani? Ndio atleast tujue kama aligongwa kwa barabara…tukisema hivyo wajua
alikuwa na head injury na pia mwili yake haiko sawa.”
Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital maintains that Desmond was
brought to the facility in critical condition and received treatment for a day
before succumbing to his injuries, but there are no records of the person who
brought him.
The family is demanding answers and CCTV footage to establish whether
Desmond arrived at the facility dead or alive.
“Mwenye kumleta ndio hatujui ni nani, tumejaribu kuitisha CCTV footage
lakini bado hawajatupea,” Elwin said.
Raymond Oboo, brother-in-law to the deceased, said: “Tumefanya
everything that can give us a leeway of who brought him here, either dead or
alive, but we haven't succeeded in that line. Our demand is that Coast General
watusaidie tujue ndugu yetu aliletwa hapa na nani tupate kujua aligongwa wapi
akiwa na nani wakifanya nini…”
Police have launched investigations, while a post-mortem examination is
expected to be conducted.
