Moi University’s
main campus in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, has been closed indefinitely
following industrial action by staff that commenced on Monday.
According to the
school’s administration, the workers’ strike interfered with operations at the
campus necessitating closure of the institution.
“At its special
meeting held on Wednesday, October 27, the Senate resolved to suspend
teaching and learning activities at the main campus indefinitely due to
industrial action by the university staff which has affected university
operations,” read from the administration.
Students have
since been asked to remove their belongings and leave the grounds by Thursday mid-day.
The closure of the
institution will however only affect the main campus and not satellite campuses
which will remain functional.
The university
staff cited grievances such as delayed pay as well as delayed review and
promotion of staff among causes for the go slow.
They similarly
stated that the institution lacks proper equipment and basic resources to
enable a healthy teaching environment.
They said that
their efforts to reach the university Vice-Chancellor, Prof Isaac Kosgei, and
raise their grievances were ignored.
The staff, through
their unions - Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), Kenya University
Staff Union (KUSU), Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Education Institutions,
Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA) - vowed to continue with the strike
until their complaints are heard.
