Court detains 9 Moi University students accused of spreading incitement messages

Nine Moi University students accused of allegedly circulating hate speech flyers in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County will be held for a further three days to allow police conclude investigations into the allegations, an Eldoret court has ruled.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) sleuths based in Eldoret arrested the suspects at Moi University's grounds on Monday after they allegedly spread the messages of incitement on a WhatsApp group.

While urging the court to allow the suspects to be detained for the additional days, lead investigator Sophia Ibrahim told justice Onkoba Magire that the flyers had called for the ejection of a specific tribe from Cheplaskei and Kesses areas of Uasin Gishu County should they decide not to back Deputy President William Ruto's presidential bid at the polls next week.

The suspects were against being detained for the additional days on grounds that they were not to blame for spreading the controversial flyers.

Justice Magire however ruled that they be held at Langas Police Station in Eldoret.
