Mombasa Hospital closed indefinitely after gas tank explosion

Mombasa Hospital has been shut down until further notice following the fire incident that forced patients to be evacuated.

On Tuesday night, it took firefighters approximately two hours to extinguish the fire that was reportedly caused by a gas tank explosion.

“Mtungi wa gesi ulilipuka katika sehemu ya jikoni ya hospitali hio na kisha kusambaa,” Coast Police Regional Security Commander Rashid Yakub said.

He said all patients were evacuated and transferred to other hospitals including Pandya, Aga Khan, Premier and Coast General.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, 20 patients were transferred to the various hospitals.

Police cordoned off the area as families of those hospitalized and curious onlookers flocked the vicinity.

The Mombasa Hospital management has stated that none of the workers or patients were injured during the Tuesday night incident.

On Tuesday, the County Governor Hassan Joho lauded firefighters and staff from the Mombasa Hospital for their speedy response.

“My sympathies go to patients who were admitted at Mombasa hospital at the time fire broke out. Thanks to firefighters from different units who responded on time to contain the situation. To hospital staff and good samaritans, asanteni for the speedy evacuation of patients,” he said on Twitter.
