Mombasa police investigate ‘family stage-managed abduction’

The alleged abduction of a woman said had been kidnapped while eight months pregnant is now the subject of investigation by Mombasa police.

Officers are probing why the family of Saida Abdrehman, 20, allegedly stage-managed her disappearance and lied that she was pregnant.

Police are however not probing why she was “abducted”: according to them, her family made up the story and sent detectives on a wild goose chase across several counties.

Mombasa DCIO Jacob Kanake revealed that medical reports from the Coast Provincial General Hospital show that she was not pregnant and cannot conceive due to a medical condition.

“It is clear that there is something behind all this we are not being told, her mother and father will also be summoned to give us details as to why,” he said.

Saida and her kin could face several charges among them giving false information to the police.

Muslims for Human Rights chairman Khelef Khalifa, who had accused the police of apparent slow response into the matter, retracted his statements.

“We don’t know the motive…this is the thing probably the police need to unearth, why she lied if she lied,” said Khalifa.

Saida’s family had claimed she went missing in Mombasa on Thursday before the family announced that she was later found unconscious in Pumwani area, Nairobi.
