Moses Kuria opts to settle hate speech case out of court

Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria has sought to settle hate speech charges facing him out of court.

Through his advocate, Mr. Kuria asked the court for time to pursue settlement with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission over a 2015 hate speech case.

The prosecution stated that Kuria’s advocate had written to NCIC over the possibility of having the matter settled out of court and was still awaiting feedback.

The matter was to be heard on February 14 and 15 as the prosecution team was already prepared to commence hearing of two witness testimonies.

When the defense, however, revealed to the court of the settlement plan, the prosecution counsel told the presiding magistrate; “We have no objection to allow reconciliation out of court.”

Principal Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot as such had the case adjourned to allow Kuria negotiate the settlement with NCIC.

Mr. Kuria is accused of allegedly inciting youth in Nyeri to attack and “slash” politicians opposed to National Youth Service projects in the county.

The case will be mentioned on March 14, 2018 for the court to asses out of court settlement progress.
