The helicopter that later crashed in Chepkiep, Mosop constituency, Nandi County, had crisscrossed several towns on Saturday, making multiple stopovers before it disappeared shortly after leaving Tabolwa, according to the Ministry of Roads and Transport.

Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir said the aircraft, registration 5Y-DSB, took off at 11:04am, landed in Emur Dikirr at 11:55am, and later departed at 12:20pm. It then landed in Mararianta at 12:29pm, departed at 12:54pm, and landed in Endebes at 2:04pm before taking off again at 2:07pm.

The helicopter next landed at Eldoret airstrip at 2:29pm and departed at 3:07pm, returning to Endebes at 3:41pm and taking off at 3:43pm. It later landed at Tabolwa at 4:20pm, departed at 4:25pm, and disappeared minutes later, the CS said.

Chirchir said the crash claimed the lives of Emur Dikirr MP Johana Ngeno, pilot Captain George Were, Amos Kipngetich Rotich and Nick Koskei, among others.

He said the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department (AAID) has been on the crash site and has launched investigations into the circumstances of the accident.

“In line with ICAO Annex 13, AAID has notified the State of Manufacture, Design of Aircraft, and ICAO and will issue a preliminary report within 30 days,” Chirchir said.

The CS said the government remains committed to air transport safety and urged the public to be patient as investigations continue.
