Two people — a mother and her child — lost their lives, while another person was injured after a boda boda motorcycle they were riding was involved in an accident at Samisbei area along the Kaplelartet–Kapsorok road in Kericho County on Friday evening.

According to Kaplelartet Location Chief Robert Korir, the accident occurred after the motorcycle’s brakes failed.

Korir said the child, aged about seven, died on the spot, while the mother sustained critical injuries and succumbed while being rushed to hospital. She was pronounced dead on arrival.

The victims were returning home from a prayer day at Kakibei Girls Secondary School when the rider lost control of the motorcycle on a steep section of the road.

Chief Korir urged boda boda operators to exercise caution, especially along the stretch, which he described as a blackspot. He noted that a lorry ferrying fencing posts had recently overturned at the same spot, though its occupants escaped with minor injuries.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Sigowet Sub-county Hospital mortuary.
