Ndaragwa Member of Parliament Francis Waweru Nderitu has criticised the move by the Ministry of Education to close down Laikipia University’s Nyahururu Town Campus saying the decision was ill advised.
Speaking to the press after a tour of the constituency, Waweru accused the university’s management of failing to ensure the institution adhered to the set standards and urged the management to move with speed to ensure the decision is revoked.
“Laikipia University should not be shut because it serves the people of Nyandarua and neighbouring counties,” he said.
Waweru also revealed that plans were underway to establish the much-awaited Nyandarua University and that stakeholders are deliberating on where the university will be situated.
“Several consultative meetings have been held to identify where the university will be located and leaders have proposed Nyandarua Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) and Njabini Farmers Training Centre (FTC) to host the first classes until proper structures are put in place,” he said.
He added that a technical committee was working to ensure the university kicks off despite the infrastructural challenges that it faces.
In the recent past, differences over the location of the proposed Nyandarua University have continued to mar its establishment while leaders continue mull over its location.
A section of the leaders want the university to be put up at Ol-Kalou Town, which also serves as the county headquarters, while others want it established in one of the constituencies.
Nevertheless, they have emphasised on the need for public participation in deliberation of crucial issues affecting the county.
