MP Didmus Barasa seeks bail pending arrest as manhunt continues
Lawyers representing Kimilili MP-elect Didmus
Barasa have filed a petition seeking to compel the court to grant the embattled
legislator bail pending his arrest.
In a letter dated August 11, 2022, Khaminwa
and Khaminwa Advocates informed the Office of the Director of Public
Prosecutions (ODPP), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and
Inspector General (IG) of Police Hillary Mutyambai of the said development.
"Take notice today that Khaminwa and
Khaminwa Advocates have filed an application on behalf of Hon. Didmus Barasa
for bail pending arrest. As soon as the application is heard and appropriate
orders are made you will be advised accordingly by the said law firm," the
letter signed by lawyer John M. Khaminwa reads in part.
Barasa is currently being pursued by police
for allegedly shooting and
killing one Brian Olunga, who was the bodyguard
of Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) candidate in the Kimilili MP
race Brian Khaemba.
DPP Noordin Haji has since ordered for
Barasa's arrest following the incident with the DCI, on Thursday afternoon
commanding the legislator to turn himself in to authorities failure to which he
will face dire consequences.
A number of theories are being floated around
in regards to Barasa's whereabouts with the most notable one being that he
might have fled to a neighbouring country following the fatal shooting
incident.
