MP Mbui says Azimio not interested in impeaching Ruto

National Assembly Deputy Minority Whip Robert Mbui.

Kathiani MP Robert Mbui has now opined that the move by Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition to marshal up over 10 million signatures is not aimed at impeaching the President, but to delegitimize Kenya Kwanza government.

Despite being at pains to explain what delegitimization means, Mbui said Azimio does not recognize the current government and seeks to revoke its sovereign power.

"I want to disabuse the notion that we want to impeach. No. The impeachment process is defined in the Constitution. We have no interest in impeaching Kenya Kwanza, we want to delegitimize them. We want everyone in the world to know these people are taking the country in the wrong trajectory," he said while appearing on Citizen TV's Daybreak show on Monday.

He added: "We want everyone in the world to know that these people are taking the country in the wrong trajectory and we want them to know that people are unhappy"

"In our opinion, this regime has violated the setup of the constitution. We feel that this regime is illegitimate. We do not recognize them."

The Deputy Minority Whip further poured cold water on the dismissal made by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that the collection process is in vain.

Mbui questioned why the Kenya Kwanza leaders would bother to address the matter in public rallies if it really did not ruffle up their feathers, arguing that their initiative cannot be ignored.

"If this exercise was in futility as their leaders have said, you overheard the Deputy President himself, he called a very big meeting to talk about those 10 million signatures, you have heard the Prime CS who attended a rally to address the same signatures," he said.

"If it was an exercise in futility why is Kenya Kwanza leadership running helter-skelter talking about it," he posed.

The move to marshal up the signatures was announced by Azimio leader Raila Odinga during the Saba Saba protests, noting that it will signal the withdrawal of their sovereignty from the current government and will be part of an initiative to remove President William Ruto and his deputy Gachagua from office.

Gachagua on his part said that the move is in futility and will not yield to anything.

"Even if they collect those signatures, where will they take them? People signed on the ballot and that was the end. I want to tell the people of Kenya to stay focused; we are not bothered by the noise of the opposition," Gachagua said.
