MPs approve Ksh61 billion supplementary budget

The National Assembly has approved a Ksh61 billion supplementary budget to fund government expenditure for the financial year ending June 2017.

The government prepared the supplementary budget seeking MPs approval to withdraw the additional funds for the 2016/2017 financial year to fight the effects of drought and resolve salary disputes involving university lecturers and doctors.

Treasury had also sought an additional Ksh6.9 billion to deal with the ongoing drought that has affected 23 counties.

The estimates tabled by the Budget and Appropriations Committee allocated the Ministry of Interior Security Ksh1 billion for repatriation of 600,000 Somali refugees from Dadaab and Ksh1 billion to the Ministry of Sports to enable Kenya host the 2017 World Under-18 Athletics Championships.
