The push for reforms of the United Nations (UN), particularly the expansion and restructuring of the Security Council, is among the key agenda items for Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, during his official trip to Lusaka, Zambia.
The 13th
Ministerial Meeting of the African Union Committee of Ten Heads of State and
Government (C-10) on the Reform of the United Nations Security Council is
scheduled to take place from June 3rd to 5th, 2025, in Lusaka.
Popularly known
as the C-10, the Committee of Ten Heads of State and Government is advocating
for an African Common Position (CAP) on the reform of the UN Security Council.
Among its key demands is the allocation of two permanent seats for Africa on
the Security Council.
The C-10 also
seeks to address historical injustices committed against the continent, calls
for reparations, and demands a review of Africa’s non-representation and
under-representation in the Security Council.
The African
Union’s C-10 Committee on UN Security Council Reform comprises Algeria, Congo,
Equatorial Guinea, Kenya, Libya, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Uganda, and
Zambia. Separately, another AU group is pushing for the promotion of education,
science, technology, and innovation (ESTI).
Dr.
Mudavadi has recently emphasized that with a population of 1.4 billion, Africa
remains vastly underrepresented in global decision-making structures. He noted
that the continent continues to be sidelined on critical matters of global
peace, security, and governance.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Dr. Mudavadi is expected to hold several bilateral engagements with top officials of the Zambian government and Foreign Affairs Ministers from other African countries in attendance.
