Mudavadi wants Nkaissery, IG to resign over beating of protesters

Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi has called for the resignation of Interior Cabinet Secretary Major Gen. (Rtd.) Joseph Nkaiserry and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet over what he termed as the brutal assault on innocent protesters on Monday.

Mudavadi, who was speaking after a meeting to discuss rising spectre of tension and political violence in the country with the British High Commissioner Nic Hailey, said that police took the lead from their superiors’ threats before the demonstrations to unleash terror on civilians on Monday.

“Police follow orders and when the CS Interior issues threats, he is instructing police to commit crimes for which he should be held accountable,” said Mudavadi.

The former Deputy Premier further insists that IG Boinnet is responsible for operational discipline in the police service and he should the first to apologise by resigning.

“I can believe he is serious if he said the known police officers have been arrested.”

Mudavadi said police approach is a pointer that stalled police reforms are responsible for the police brutality witnessed when police use excessive force against protesters.

While condemning the beating of innocent people, Mudavadi said the Jubilee government has relaxed on police reforms paving way and strengthening the culture of violence by police.

Mudavadi reiterated that IEBC commissioners should save the country the bloody agony by resigning.

“Commissioners shouldn’t hold the country to ransom in contempt of public opinion. They have admitted Kenyans have lost their trust in their credibility. They should plead their innocence by resigning,” he said.

Mudavadi’s sentiments come amid pressure by religious leaders for dialogue to solve the current stand-off between CORD leaders and their push for the disbandment of the electoral body IEBC.

Monday’s protests were marred with violence with several groups condemning the police for use of excessive force to quell the riots.
