Mukuuni Boys High School in Chuka, Tharaka Nithi County was on Wednesday closed till next term following a suspected outbreak of cholera at the learning facility.

Confirming the development, Tharaka Nithi County Director of Education Bridget Wambua told Citizen Digital that since last week a small number of students had been complaining about stomach pains and looseness of the bowels.

The situation worsened on Monday this week with approximately 40 students being affected.

"Some were taken to the hospital where they got treated and returned to school but three were admitted. One of them has already been discharged and allowed to go home," said Wambua.

She added that the school's management believes that the facility's water source might have been contaminated by hazardous substances owing to an ongoing road construction project within its vicinity.

She added that her department will however wait for a conclusive report from the county's public health officer before issuing out an official statement in regards to the incident.

Students will sit for their end-of-term exams when the school reopens.
