Garsen MP Ali Wario Guyo and his Galole counterpart Hiribae Buya are reportedly safe after going missing during a relief food distribution exercise on Saturday.

According to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki the legislators were part of an 18-man group stranded at a yet-to-be established location on the waters of the Tana River.

"Security agencies have established contact with a passenger in the boat that went missing earlier this evening in the waters of Tana River," CS Kithure said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter.

"All eighteen passengers and crew are so far safe but are stranded at a yet-to-be-established location."

The Interior CS said a multi-agency search and rescue team spearheaded by the Kenya Coast Guard had been dispatched for the rescue mission overnight.

The MPs and their aides were part of a food distribution exercise for flood victims when they got lost in the river while tracing their way to Garsen.

A video that has since gone viral captured legislators appealing for help after the incident, which comes in the wake of heavy rains that continue to pound several parts of the country.

The team that has been running rescue missions on a private boat after the Tana River broke its banks is believed to have gone missing after losing contact with the flanking team.

According to a Daily Nation report, the team left for a Mlima Abo rescue mission on Saturday at 10am but were yet to return by 7 pm when another team on a different boat returned.
