Munya ditches NASA, to support Uhuru re-election

Just a week after joining the National Super Alliance (NASA), the former Meru Governor Peter Munya has ditched the opposition coalition to rally behind President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election in October 17 poll.

Tweeting on his official account, President Uhuru Kenyatta said the ‘PNU chairman’ Peter Munya and other party officials pledged to support his re-election bid following consultations at State House, Nairobi.

In a statement to newsrooms, the Party of National Unity (PNU) party leader said that following consultations, the decision to support President Kenyatta is in the best interest of the country.

“After thorough consultations with our party members, elders and supporters across the country, it has been agreed that in the very best interest of the country we support President Kenyatta in the forthcoming presidential election,” read the statement

Munya had on Monday, September 4th, 2017  been unveiled as the sixth NASA principal, pushing for an end to ‘the culture of stealing elections’ as reasons for defecting to the opposition.

Several other ‘PNU officials’ including Secretary General John Okenwa Anunda, Treasurer Peter Kaberia and the party’s senatorial candidate in the August 8 elections Mugambi Imanyara had also joined NASA.

The former Council of Governors (CoG) chairperson lost his seat to Jubilee’s Kiraitu Murungi.

According to IEBC website, Murungi garnered 281,737 while Munya came second with 232,569 votes.
