Murang’a bar owners sound alarm over sale of counterfeit alcohol

The government has been asked to conduct an in-depth investigation to help establish the cause of death of four people suspected to have died after consuming an alcoholic drink.

Speaking on Monday, the Murang’a County Bars and Hotels Owners Association called on County Commissioner Mr John Elungata to order for a probe to help establish the cause of death of the victims, noting that the market in the area has been flooded by counterfeit alcohol.

Led by its chairman Mr James Waweru and vice chairman, Mr Simon Jogoo, the association asked the Murang’a County Government to establish a laboratory to analyse liquors perceived to be harmful.

They further asked the national government to ensure details of the certified liquor brands are circulated in the rural areas to ensure the locals are aware.

“There is a need for a scientific laboratory in the county to help end the malicious speculations circulating in the areas in case they are associated with deaths,” said Waweru.

The association officials also warned its 2,000 members against selling uncertified brands saying they would be disqualified if they were caught.
