Bishop Maria Wainaina of the Catholic Diocese of Murang’a has rejected a Ksh.50,000 gift from the Kirinyaga County Assembly for leading them in this year's annual thanksgiving service, as the church steps up its vigilance on accepting monetary donations from the political class.

Wainaina, in the same breath, refused a goat bought for him by the MCAs and directed them to instead forward the gifts to the Kerugoya School for the Deaf, as part of community service to the people who elected them to office.

They walked up to the pulpit after mass, hoping to receive more heavenly blessings by gifting the man of God for leading them in this year’s annual Kirinyaga County Assembly thanksgiving service.

In hand was Ksh 50,000 in a white envelope that the Kirinyaga County Assembly Speaker, Muteti Murimi hoped to deliver to Bishop Maria Wainaina of the Murang’a Catholic Diocese on behalf of the over 30 county legislators, as well as the assembly’s staff.

This white goat was also meant for the man of the cloth. He rejected it.

“Ile ambayo ni ya aina ya pesa, tuwasaidie wale ambao wana shida sana," the bishop asserted.

While reminding the MCAs of their sworn duty to the Kirinyaga citizenry, Wainaina asked for the gifts to be taken to a nearby school for the deaf in Kerugoya, as part of their responsibility in looking after the people who put them in office.

“Kwa vile sisi ni viongozi wa umma, basi wale ambao wako na shida sana na tena zaidi, ndio tunataka sana sana waweze kupata manufaa ya kazi yetu, na nimeshukuru sana," he added.

All the leaders could do, given the rejection, was to make a request.

“Tunataka uiombee as we take to those kids, ikuwe na baraka yako," Bernard Gichangi, Nominated MCA, stated.

This incident comes as the church becomes increasingly adamant about not accepting donations and gifts from the political class, which has, in the recent past, used the pulpit to endear themselves to Kenyans.
