Mutyambai orders probe after cops video on sexual harassment goes viral

Inspect General of Police Hilary Mutyambai has ordered investigations after a video of a female officer alleging unfair treatment and sexual harassment went viral on social media.

Mutyambai said the officer, who is attached to the Traffic Department in Mombasa, had complained against a merchant and was subjected to an inquiry by DCI officers resulting into a departmental action.

“I have directed the Gender and Children Directorate to independently investigate the matter and give a report within 7 days,” he said on Twitter.

In the video, the police officer asks the IG to let her resign as she can no longer tolerate unfair treatment.

“Mimi naomba nipewe tu nafasi niende, nitoke, niresign peacefully…. Nimeandika several resignation letters, attached to hospital letter… Hazifiki. Letters hazifiki kwa Inspector General. Sasa, hatuwezi kuwa tunateseka. Wengine wanaenda kabla waue ama they commit suicide. Mimi [inaudible] kuua mtu na siwezi commit suicide. Ntaenda nje na ntafanya kazi vizuri sana kama raia wengine,” she says in the video.

She accuses the office of Internal Affairs of not addressing the plight of female police officers and even urges President Uhuru Kenyatta to disband it.
