This follows the recent release of the Status of Drugs and Substance Use Among University Students in Kenya survey, which highlighted alarming trends that call for immediate intervention.
The initiative aligns with a directive from the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen who has emphasized the urgency of curbing drug abuse among students.
As part of this effort, NACADA will conduct a series of regional engagements to foster collaboration among key stakeholders in the university education sector.
These engagements, structured along Kenya’s former provincial regions, aim to ensure broad participation and inclusivity. They will bring together university administrators, students, faculty, government agencies, and other relevant stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions to the growing challenge of substance abuse.
The survey findings indicate that a significant number of university students are involved in drug and substance abuse, with alcohol, bhang (cannabis), and prescription drugs being the most commonly abused substances.
Recognizing the urgent need for collective action, the regional forums will serve as platforms for stakeholders to discuss root causes, share insights, and collaboratively design prevention and intervention strategies.
A key focus of the initiative is strengthening partnerships between NACADA, universities, and other stakeholders to enhance prevention, rehabilitation, and awareness efforts. The Authority underscores the importance of equipping students with life skills and knowledge to resist peer pressure and make informed decisions.
“Prevention is our most powerful tool. By empowering students and raising awareness, we can significantly reduce drug demand and build a resilient generation,” NACADA CEO Anthony Omerikwa stated.
This initiative aligns with NACADA’s broader mandate to foster a drug-free society and demonstrates the Authority’s commitment to tackling substance abuse at all levels. Additionally, the regional engagements will facilitate resource mobilization and the sharing of best practices to support universities in implementing effective drug control programs.
NACADA urges all stakeholders to actively participate in these forums, emphasizing that the fight against drug abuse requires a collective and sustained effort.
