The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) on Thursday morning raided a notorious illicit brew distillery in Sarangombe area, Kibra, Nairobi.
During the 2am
operation conducted jointly with Nairobi Area Police, the authority uncovered a large-scale operation strategically concealed along a riverbank
deep within the informal settlements. Although no suspects were found on-site,
officers encountered overwhelming evidence of ongoing illegal brewing.
Two massive distilleries were discovered in
full production, supported by more than 30 distillation drums. The team also
seized over 100 sealed 200-litre drums filled with kangara, a toxic raw
ingredient used to manufacture illicit liquor. The entire setup was dismantled
and destroyed to prevent further distribution of the harmful brew.
NACADA Chief
Executive Officer Dr. Anthony Omerikwa praised the swift action of the
enforcement team, noting the raid underscores the Authority’s resolve to
protect communities from the devastating impact of illicit alcohol.
“This operation sends a strong message to those who profit from
poisoning our communities. Illicit brews have destroyed countless families,
fueled crime, and caused preventable deaths. NACADA will continue to work
closely with law enforcement and communities to ensure such criminal
enterprises are eliminated,” he said.
Dr. Omerikwa
further noted that the raid was part of the ongoing 100 Days Rapid Results
Initiative (RRI) against drug and substance abuse, spearheaded by the Ministry
of Interior under Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
“This operation is part of a multi-agency strategy being rolled out nationwide to disrupt the supply chains of illicit alcohol and drugs. The RRI demonstrates the government’s resolve to protect Kenyans and reclaim communities from the grip of substance abuse,” he added.
