The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has seized a sack of cannabis in Kisii town, even as a notorious suspect linked to the illegal trade escaped arrest.

The Saturday morning raid was conducted following a tip-off from concerned members of the public, who had raised alarm over rising cannabis abuse in the area. Authorities say the operation targeted a homestead suspected to be part of a wider drug distribution network.

Speaking after the operation, NACADA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anthony Omerikwa said the location of the seizure, within a densely populated neighborhood, points to an established and active supply chain.

“The homestead where this sack of cannabis was recovered is nestled in a busy neighbourhood, which indicates that the supply is adequate,” he said.

Dr Omerikwa noted that the suspect who fled the scene is well known to the agency and is believed to be a key supplier to local peddlers. He further expressed concern over the proximity of the site to numerous student hostels, warning that such networks pose a significant risk to young people.

Residents who witnessed the raid commended the agency’s action, describing the suspect as a long-standing source of concern within the community. Some, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, claimed the individual was well-connected but pledged to support authorities with information.

“We hail NACADA for cracking the whip on this individual. We are ready to support the agency and will volunteer information as soon as he is sighted,” one resident said.

Dr Omerikwa confirmed that a manhunt for the suspect is ongoing, assuring the public of NACADA’s continued commitment to dismantling drug networks and safeguarding communities.

“The Authority will not relent in keeping communities safe from the harms of alcohol and drug abuse,” he said.

NACADA has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as efforts to curb drug trafficking in the region intensify.
